What is Chumsum?

Chumsum is a simple, intuitive app for friends, family, colleagues, or any group that shares expenses. Create a Moment— an event, trip, or shared experience — and add the people involved. And is my data stored securely?

Yes. Chumsum stores data both locally on your device and in the cloud to enable sharing with friends. The data shared in the cloud are only accessibly by yourself and the friends you designate.  Most importantly, we  do not reuse or sell  data or run third-party trackers.

Automatic Conversion: Amounts are converted to your chosen base currency for summaries, giving you a clear view of totals and balances across currencies.

How It Works

• Manage Friends: Add friends manually or import from your device Contacts. Update their profile image, name, and email for easy identification.

• Organize Groups: Group friends to streamline adding participants to Moments.

• Create Moments: Capture shared experiences such as vacations, meals, gifts, or trips as Moments.

• Record Transactions: Log transactions within a Moment and define expense splits using methods like equal share, specific amounts, percentages, or custom shares. Clearly tag the payer.

• Track Settlements: Each participant can mark their portion as settled, providing transparency.

• View Live Status: Use Spotlight to see an up-to-date summary of who owes whom, with the option to view detailed breakdowns at the Moment level.

FAQ

Q: How do I log in to the app?

A: Chumsum uses a secure, password-less login method powered by Google Firebase Authentication. To log in, simply enter your email address, and you’ll receive a one-time login link via email. Clicking the link will authenticate you and grant access to the app. No passwords are stored or transmitted, ensuring your account remains secure.

Q: What if I didn’t receive the email authentication link?

A: If you don’t receive the login link, first check your spam or junk folder, as it may have been filtered. Make sure you entered the correct email address, then try requesting the link again. Email delivery may take a few minutes, so please be patient. If you still haven’t received it, contact our support for assistance.

Q: Which email domains are accepted?

A: Chumsum currently accepts emails from: me.com, gmail.com, yahoo.com, icloud.com, hotmail.com, outlook.com, live.com, aol.com, protonmail.com, zoho.com, gmx.com, gmx.net, yandex.com, yandex.ru, mail.com, fastmail.com. If you have a specific domain not listed, contact our support for assistance.

Q: Will I be logged out?

A: You will generally stay logged in on your device. If you are logged out (for example, after uninstalling the app or clearing app data), you can log back in by entering the same email address. A new login link will be sent to your email, allowing you to access your account securely.

Q: How do I share with friends?

A: You can share moments and related transactions with your friends using their email addresses. Your friends will need to log in to the Chumsum app with the same email to access the shared data. Shared information is securely stored in Google Firebase.

Q: Can I edit a transaction after having shared it?

A: Yes — editing a transaction recalculates shares, however, you can only edit the transactions captured by you.  If some shares were marked settled earlier, then  Chumsum will disable edits.

Q: What are the editing restrictions?

A: You can only edit moments or transactions that you have created. Moments or transactions created by other users cannot be modified, although you can view them if they are shared with you.

Q: Where can I see who owes whom?

A: You can view the live status under Spotlight, which shows who owes you and who you owe. At the Moment level, you can see the same breakdown for that event or trip. At the Transaction level, you can open the transaction sheet to see exactly how the expense was shared among participants.

Q: How does settlement work?

A: When you mark a friend as “settled” at the moment level, Chumsum updates the settlement status for all of that friend’s shares within the moment. This is useful when someone says “I’ve paid everyone back” or when the group settles externally. Alternatively, you can mark a friend as “settled” at the transaction level. All settled amounts are excluded from the Owe/Owed summary, ensuring it always reflects the live balance.

Privacy Policy

Chumsum values your privacy. This app is designed to operate entirely on your device without transmitting or collecting any personal information.

• All data and user information are stored securely and locally on your device. Data you choose to share with friends (such as moments or transactions) is stored securely in Google’s Firebase. No other personal data is collected, transmitted, or stored on external servers.

• The app may use device authentication methods such as Face ID, Touch ID, or device passcode solely to control access to certain features (e.g., masking or unmasking sensitive financial information). These authentication methods are handled by your device’s secure systems and are not accessed or stored by the app.

• Chumsum does not use any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services.
